Established in 1961, the National Institute of Design is one of the internationally acclaimed and finest educational and research institutions of Design. As one of the top institutes in India, NID delivers Industrial, Communication, Textile and IT Integrated Experiential Design courses to its students. It is an autonomous institution under the aegis of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. Another interesting part about NID is that it has been declared declared “Institution of National Importance” under the National Institute of Design Act 2014. The design institute has also been recognised by the Dept. of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR), GOI as a scientific and industrial design research organisation.

In 2014, NID has been named among the Top 30 design colleges of the world published by Ranker. The institute has academic exchange relationships with multiple international organisations. This provides perks like faculty exchange, research collaborations and student exchange programs. Apart from that, the Trellis which is a design research journal features research projects of both NID faculty & students, conference papers, description of NID archival documents, book reviews, interviews, etc. NID has also collaborated with Startup India and Make in India. Initiatives by NID include the National Design Business Incubator and Young Designers.

There are 3 NID campuses. These are Bangalore, Gandhinagar, and Ahmedabad. Across its three campuses, NID offers a 4-year B.Des course, a 2.5-year M.Des course, and a 3-year full-time and 5-year part-time PhD courses across various specializations. For admission to the National Institute of Design, candidates are required to qualify in NId’s Design Aptitude Test along with the basic eligibility criteria.

Along with their academic performance, candidates will be shortlisted for admission on the basis NID-DAT scores. Follow the step by step process below to apply at NID.

How to Apply

  • Visit the official website.
  • Enter a valid email and phone number.
  • Log in to the account.
  • Fill in the necessary details carefully.
  • Click on the ‘save’ button on the screen.
  • Upload the documents, photograph, and signature. It is mandatory for the documents to be in .jpeg or .jpg format.
  • Click on save and proceed to pay the application fee.
  • Application fee:
    • For one discipline: Rs. 2000 (Rs. 1000 for SC/ST candidates).
    • For two disciplines: Rs. 4000 (Rs. 2000 for SC/ST candidates).
  • You can pay the application fee online through debit or credit card. Offline payment option is also available through demand draft.
  • Take the printout of the application form for future reference.
  • After the NID-DAT test, candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of their performance.
  • Candidates have to visit their chosen campus to confirm admission.
